Cruising the Port Royal Canals: Naples' Hidden Street Grid

Port Royal was dredged out of mangrove in the 1930s by Glen Sample, who worked out that if you cut canals instead of streets, every lot becomes waterfront and every house gets a dock. Ninety years later it is routinely the most expensive residential neighborhood in Florida — and from the road you see almost none of it. Hedges, gates, and a street plan designed to discourage exactly the kind of curiosity you have.

Why it only works from the water

The canals are the front doors. Houses here are built to face the water, which means the architecture, the dock furniture, the yacht tenders and the landscaping all point at you as you idle past at no-wake speed. You are not peering over a fence; you are travelling the street the houses were designed for.

What you actually see

• Gordon Pass and the inlet where the Gulf meets Naples Bay
• Twenty to thirty estates in the $15m–$60m range, most of them rebuilt since 2018
• Sportfish boats and 80-foot motor yachts on private lifts, which is its own kind of window shopping
• Dolphins working the canal mouths on the outgoing tide — reliably, because the bait stacks there
• The contrast run into Aqualane Shores and Old Naples, where the houses get older and lower

How long, and what it costs

Two hours is the right length: enough to run the canals properly, cross the bay and get back without anyone getting restless. A private two-hour Port Royal cruise for up to six people runs around $550 in 2026, or about $575 timed to sunset — which on this route is the version we'd book, because the low sun hits the west-facing houses and the whole neighborhood turns gold at once.
