What to Wear on a Naples Boat Trip (and What to Leave in the Car)

Soft soles, real sunscreen, a layer for the ride home — and the one item that ends up overboard every single week.

Nobody in Naples dresses up for a boat. The Gulf here is warm, the sun is stronger than it feels with a breeze on you, and the only real rules come from the deck itself: nothing that marks it, nothing that blows away, nothing you would mind getting wet.

Wear this

  • A swimsuit under light clothes — beach landings and swim stops are usually spontaneous
  • Soft-soled shoes or bare feet. Dark rubber soles scuff a deck; most captains prefer barefoot
  • A long-sleeve sun shirt or linen layer — better than reapplying sunscreen for three hours
  • A hat with a strap or a low-profile cap. Wide brims are excellent at 5 knots and gone at 25
  • Polarised sunglasses, ideally with a retainer. They cut the glare and let you see rays and fish

Bring this

  • Reef-safe mineral sunscreen, SPF 30+. Spray drifts and stains upholstery — lotion is the better guest
  • A light windbreaker or towel for the ride back; 25 knots after sunset is genuinely cool
  • A dry bag or zip pouch for your phone
  • Motion-sickness tablets if you are unsure — taken 45 minutes before, not on the dock
  • Cash for the captain's tip and a card for a dockside stop

Leave this in the car

  • Glass bottles — banned on most decks and a nightmare barefoot
  • Black-soled sneakers and heels
  • Loose paper, plastic bags and anything that will end up in the water at speed
  • Full-size hard coolers; almost every charter supplies ice and a cooler already

If you have children aboard

Florida law requires children under six to wear a life jacket on a vessel under 26 feet while under way, and charters carry properly sized ones. Bring a change of clothes, a snack that survives heat, and go in the morning — calm water is worth more to a five-year-old than any itinerary. Operators used to families, including the private trips run out of Naples Bay, will shorten a route on the spot when the mood turns, which is something a fixed-schedule cruise cannot do.
